AQA AS and A2 LEVEL Chemistry

DIGITAL CAMERAIn the sixth form we are offering AQA A Level Chemistry. This course provides an innovative approach to teaching and learning Chemistry in which chemical concepts are developed using real world chemical applications drawn from modern applications:

  • in industry
  • in everyday life
  • in the environment

The first year AS component

In the first year (AS) there are 2 units:

  • Unit 1 – Foundation Chemistry
  • Unit 2 – Chemistry in Action

These units are examined using structured questions and extended writing. Also during the year:

  • Unit 3 – Internal assessment of investigative and practical skills in chemistry

The second year A2 component

In the second year 2 further units are taught:

  • Unit 4 – Kinetics, Equilibria and Organic Chemistry
  • Unit 5 – Energetics, Redox and Inorganic Chemistry

Also during the year:

  • Unit 6 – Internal assessment of investigative and practical skills in chemistry

These units are also examined using structured questions and extended writing.
These units will be developed further by using local and national industrial links, and students may be expected to spend some time in the chemical industry.

Links with other subjects

Even today when it is difficult to obtain a job, there is a shortage of engineers and scientists. The ability to solve problems by a scientific approach is important and Chemistry is a vital link in the development of the scientific mind. It acts both as a support for Physics, Biology and Geography, but it also stands in its own right as a Science worth studying in detail at a higher level.

Links with Industry and Universities

Over the past 3 years students have visited

  • Lafarge Cement Works
  • Corus (British Steel) Scunthorpe
  • Keele University workshops
