Extra Curricular

There are many opportunities for students to pursue their interests out of the classroom:

Students are encouraged to take on roles of leadership and, through excellent links with our feeder schools, students are involved in running sports tournaments and festivals. An extensive range of extra-curricular sports is offered including football, basketball, multi-gym, netball, trampolining, badminton, rugby, rounders and tennis. There is a strong tradition of sporting achievement.

HPAPerforming Arts

The music department offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Instrumental tuition on strings, brass, woodwind, guitar and percussion are currently available within school and there are opportunities for all students to share the enjoyment of music with others. Large scale musical and dramatic productions give our students the opportunity to display their acting talents on stage or provide technical assistance behind the scenes.

House Activities

All students are members of a House. Throughout the year there is a wide range of inter-house activities at both junior and senior level. These include sports tournaments, quizzes, and cooking art, performing arts, pool and darts competitions.

The annual House Performing Arts Competition results in three excellent music and drama evenings being held every autumn.

Educational_VisitsEducational Visits

A wide variety of visits takes place; many are educational, while others are of a social nature. You will always be informed of proposed visits and your permission obtained in advance. The governing body has adopted a charging policy along lines recommended by Staffordshire LA. As part of this policy parents are asked to contribute to the costs of visits, as without such contributions it would obviously be difficult to sustain the current broad range of activities. Assistance is available for parents who might find this difficult.

Overseas Visits

Students are offered a wide range of opportunities for travel overseas.

The Modern Languages team run annual trips to France, Germany and Spain. These aim to give students the opportunity to practise the skills learned in lessons. Joint Visits with other subjects are held such as to Berlin (History) and to Poitiers to investigate moving image technology (Science).

Every second year, during the Easter break, the school has offered the opportunity to participate in a Nile cruise. This trip is open to all years and gives a wonderful holiday opportunity in a truly historic setting.

Open to all years is the school ski trip, now running annually over February half term. Students get the chance to learn to ski or snow board in a top European resort.

EsteLink with Este

We are at the forefront of educational links with Leek’s twin town of Este in Italy. Annual visits take place with a variety of sporting, musical and cultural events. In 2007/08 a school to school link between Leek High Specialist Technology School and Este IT IS Technology School was set up. The link between the two schools is supported by Comenius (EU) funding for language, sport and music projects and visits that students from both schools will take part in over a two year period. These links have been so successful because of the commitment, good behaviour and ambassadorial skills of our students.

Leek High also supports youngsters in individual pursuits outside of the school.
