D & T Electronics

SUBJECT Design and Technology
TEACHER IN CHARGE Mrs J Wheat
WHAT COURSE DO I FOLLOW? Edexcel Design and Technology: Electronics
WHAT WILL I STUDY?

ElectronicsIn the core, topics to be studied include: classification and properties of common materials, energy, mechanisms, structures and batch production using CAD/CAM.

Much of the teaching is achieved through ‘hands-on’ experience using models, kits, components and computers. Design skills are developed though a major ‘design and make’ project.

Within Electronics students will design, construct and test circuits using a system – based approach alongside programmable chip technology. Electronic components studied include transistors, integrated circuits and basic digital circuitry.

DETAILS OF FORMAL EXAMINATION

At the end of the course there is a 1.5 hour written paper, which is worth 40% of the final mark.

COURSEWORK DETAILS Students decide on a project that allows them to concentrate on the area of the subject in which they have a particular interest. It can be electronic (e.g. burglar alarms or safety device), or a computer controlled system. The project contributes 60% of the final mark.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Whilst many students might feel that they would enjoy the practical content of this course, they need to be aware that a good understanding of mathematics is a great help.
